Trauma Counseling (EMDR, PTSD)

Samaritan Counseling Center now offers EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This scientifically validated technique uses music to stimulate left and right hemispheres of the brain to promote psychological healing.

What our clients are saying…

Myself and my husband have been with Jan for a while. She is very considerate, understanding, listens and makes suggestions. We need to practice more.

Jan Prentice, LCSW-R has been trained in Alternating Bilateral Stimulation for emotion regulation and treatment of trauma and other emotion based issues.

It is not clear how or why a traumatic memory gets “stuck” and continues to cause harm or dysfunction. In persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) extreme distress occurs when they are reminded of the traumatic event . They experience flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, disrupted sleep, or have difficulty going about their normal daily lives because of a variety of frequent reminders of the trauma.

Fortunately, we do not need to understand the exact mechanism to provide relief to clients. Revisiting a memory during EMDR allows the memory to be reprocessed. The old fearful and overwhelmed response spontaneously resolves into an appropriate and more functional understanding. Clients realize fully that although a bad/unpleasant/traumatic event did happen, it is truly behind them; in the past, and they are really okay now.

The spontaneous healing that occurs with EMDR can be used with major traumas and also with minor less debilitating traumas.

If you think you might have PTSD or would like help dealing with a major or minor trauma, please contact the Samaritan Counseling Center.
